How does financial aid work?

Financial aid is money to help you and your family cover educational expenses. It is intended to supplement, not replace, the amount you and your family can afford. Students applying for all federal, state and institutional grants and scholarships must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

For the upcoming academic year (August - May), families can submit their FAFSA as early as January 1. Both the student and parent must apply for individual PIN numbers fo file the FAFSA electronically. Completion of the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet is recommended to simplfy the completion of the online version of the FAFSA.

Here are a few points to remember:

  • Family circumstances and aid program requirements may change from year to year.
  • You are required to reapply for financial aid each year you expect to receive aid.
  • There is no guarantee that you will receive the same amount of aid each year. We do our best, however, to see you have the resources to complete your educational objectives.
  • FAFSA results received after April 1 will be awarded from remaining funds. To give yourself the best chance, apply early.
  • Additional assistance you receive after the financial aid office has awarded you may reduce or eliminate certain need-based aid you were previously offered.
  • Eligibility for financial aid is determined by the difference between the cost of attending college (actual billed cost) and the calculated family contribution.
To put it another way... Billed cost - family contribution = Need.
