Hello to all! I hope everyone is having a great start to finals week! This semester has flown by. It's hard to believe I only have three semesters left at ODU until I graduate. Today I met with my friend Charlene, who is a donor recruiter for the American Red Cross, and gave her a tour of campus looking at different places that can serve for blood drive locations next semester. We usually have the blood drives in the Colonial Room, which is a central spot on campus. However, recently the American Red Cross met with our president and some of the vice presidents of our university and are working together to make ODU a contingency donor location. We already hold three blood drives a year for ODU students, faculty and the general public. Being a contingency location means that we are opening our doors for the American Red Cross to hold blood drives in the events of any emergencies. In touring with Charlene I revisited all the places around campus that I haven't been to in quite a while, like my freshman year first semester biology room. I found myself taking a little trip down memory lane!
As far as Christmas goes, I am finished shopping! I got it all done in one day this past Friday. I met my Aunt Jeannie and cousin Alanna at the Jeffersonville Outlet Center. It's a great location to meet my family when I can't come all the way home because it's the halfway point between Columbus and Cincinnati. There were tons of great sales going on, especially at the Yankee Candle Outlet!
Speaking of family, I'm elated to be able to go home for all of Christmas break! I will be returning to Kentucky after work next Tuesday and then it will be time to get ready for Christmas baking, relaxation and catching up.
Have a great week of finals everyone!
Hey all! I hope that everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving!! My Thanksgiving break was spectacular. I went back home on Tuesday night (my Tuesday night class was canceled- clutch) and Wednesday helped get ready for Thanksgiving because we always have it at my house. Wednesday night all of my high school friends arrived home from their colleges and we all went out to one of the local hot spots to catch up. It was sweet because it seemed like everybody that had graduated from my high school in my year and 2 and 3 years before us was there. The best part was that my three best friends Sarah, Kelsay and Becca were all able to hang out together like old times. They are like my sisters and the four of us haven't been able to get together for a long time because we all go to different schools (ODU, UofL, UK, and NKU) and weren't home much for the summer.
For Thanksgiving about 20 of my family members from each side came over to my house and we had a huge dinner of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing etc. My favorite dish was my Aunt Sandi's famous green bean casserole. The stuff is immaculate. There was rumor that she wasn't making it this year so I called her and told her that Thanksgiving would not be the same if she didn't make it. Needless to say, she came through for the better of Thanksgiving dinner... and me haha. We played games and watched the cowboys on television and made Christmas lists... that's the tradition of Thanksgiving at our household.
When it comes to black Friday, I've never been one of the crazy shoppers out during the wee hours of the morning. My brother, however, did brave the mess. He went to Dick's and got a good deal on a jacket but bought two things for regular price. Now that's his business... but I know if I were to go out in the cold instead of being in my warm bed at 5 and 6 in the morning, I'd better get the deals of a life time on my purchases, which includes not paying full price on anything! Friday night my high school had the annual Green and White night, which is similar to Panther Madness when the winter sports are introduced. Again, I saw a lot of old friends, teachers and coaches which always brings a smile to my face.
I ended my weekend at home with my friends celebrating Sarah's 21st birthday at a place called the Haufbrahaus. If you are ever in Newport, Kentucky (across the river from the Red's stadium) I suggest going there. It is a restaurant that serves German dishes and has German dance and song. I am of German descent so I especially love it. The place is set up with long tables and benches to sit on. Tradition is that after you are finished with dinner and the band starts to play you get up and dance on the benches. Its funny to see the looks on the faces of the people who come in for the first time. The restaurant is based in Germany and since the Greater Cincinnati area has a large German population they decided to put one in Newport. It is one of very few in the US.
Fall semester is quickly wrapping up, I only have one more test in my business class, which is tomorrow and then It's study study study for exams next week. Then we're off for more than a month!!!!! Have a great week everybody!
Hello all!! So the title of this blog is a shout out to my friend Justin who has been skydiving multiple times and keeps trying to get me to go with him. He has a video of his first jump and although I haven't seen it yet, I'm more than a little hesitant to go. Not that jumping out of a plane doesn't sound fun to me because I'm sure it is quite exhilarating.. but in the past two years that he's wanted me to go, I still haven't gotten up enough gumption to try it out. Not to mention it's so very expensive. You have to take some sort of certification class before you jump and when it all comes down to it, it's approx. $250.00 to $300.00... right now, I know a whole lot more things that I could spend that kind of money on, things that don't require jumping out of planes. HOWEVER, one day when I'm a psychologist for all of Hollywood's crazy celebrities, and I'm filthy rich, I will fork out the money to experience the great art of skydiving.
Now, what's been going on around good ol' ODU this past week? Well, today I had a test for my personality psych test. Last Monday I was planning on studying for it a little bit at a time each night so I wouldn't have to stress out and cram the night and morning before the test. Even though that was my plan, I procrastinated from Monday-Saturday and didn't study at all until last night which left me stressed to the max trying to cram in everything at once. The test wasn't all that bad after all and I'm pretty sure I made sense on all of the essay questions, so I'm hoping to make it out with at least a B.
Thank the Heavens that we only have two days of class this week because of Thanksgiving! I really need a little break from school in order to come back and really focus on studying for finals. We have Thanksgiving at my house every year and my relatives from my Dad's side of the family come over. Like I've said in some of my earlier blogs, it's always so nice to spend time with family and friends when I go home because I miss them so much when I'm in Columbus!!!
Have a great Thanksgiving friends!
Hello all!!! Sorry this blog post is a little late, but I have been extremely busy lately!! It's been good being busy though. This past Wednesday we had the blood drive in Sansbury Hall which was a tremendous success. Our goal was to get 50 units of blood and we wounded up getting around 71 units total!! Thanks so much to everybody that came out by volunteering or giving blood.
All of the blood drives are extremely important; however it was a big deal that we met our goal this time because of the recent power outage. Due to the outages, the Red Cross was forced to cancel about 5 blood drives in the greater Columbus area which totaled to approximately 500 units of blood! Since this area is short on each type of blood year around, it was a big help that we were able to supply the hospitals with 21 more units than our expected goal. Thanks again to all who helped out!!
I am a psychology major and I want to work with children some day after I graduate. I am leaning towards being a child life specialist at Children's Hospital. I sent in an application a couple weeks ago to get a practicum for this department and I got a call back last week requesting me to come to an interview!! I am very excited for this opportunity. A child life specialist is a person who helps a child get through the emotional trauma that a medical injury may cause. They also work with the family of the child tending to any emotional needs they may have.
That's what I've been up to the past week!!! hope all is well with everybody! The end of the semester is just around the corner!!
