Mathematics

Degree offered: Bachelor of Science

Often called the “science of patterns,” Mathematics as a discipline encompasses the study of arithmetic, geometry, algebra and calculus to deal with quantities, magnitudes and forms, as well as relationships and attributes. At Ohio Dominican University , the study of Mathematics involves discovering patterns and applying acquired knowledge to solving many of life’s problems – be they in business, science or industry.

Studies encompass the fundamental theorems of calculus, including relations and functions, limits, continuity, derivatives, extrema, curve sketching, related rates, differentiation of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. Also covered are integral calculus including integration techniques, integration of exponential, hyperbolic functions, indeterminate forms, parametric curves, series and sequences and applications. Students gain a fundamental understanding of structured computer programming techniques, design and style from a specifically object-oriented perspective; as well as general physics, including the mechanics of translational and rotational motion, the laws of conservation of energy and momentum, hydrostatics and hydrodynamics and basic thermodynamics. Students gain experience with abstract mathematics and writing mathematical proofs, as well as linear and abstract algebra, including the computational and theoretical aspects of systems of linear equations, matrix of discrete mathematics and applications, as well as groups, rings, fields and morphisms.

In today’s technological world, the need for mathematics is evident in nearly every facet of society – from voting to consumerism – and in every career field – from bookkeeping to medical research. The fields of business, medicine, industry , education and government utilize Mathematics majors, who find professional satisfaction in jobs such as computer science, engineering, statistical analysis, national security or the actuarial sciences.
